Putting down my books,I went out to play basketball.如果说成是：
Putted down my books,I went out to play basketball.应该是错的吧.
所以,为什么书中是Armed,而不是Arming

现在分词做状语与过去分词做状语的最主要区别在于两者与所修饰的主语的主动与被动关系的区别.Armed 是用被动的啊.主语是vicar,你只能说,the vicar was armed with a torch.不能说 the vicar armed a torch .后面的句子 put 就是主动了所以用ING.比如说：Faced with difficulties,we must try to overcome them .Given more attention,the trees could have grown better.这里 主语都是被动的 we were faced with difficulties.the trees were given more attention.
你的理解是错误的。
确实是 arm sb with sth。
sb 是arm 的宾语。意思是用 sth（武器，工具）给sb 装备上
